YOU ARE INVITED TO THE W6JKV/K5AND BBQ OCTOBER 16-17, 2009 in Austin, TX
Please join Dick, K5AND, and Jimmy, W6JKV, for this awesome opportunity: continuous BS about Cycle
24; explore fantastic possibilities for expeditions to un- worked countries; meet hams from all over
the world who love 6 meters, love 2 meter EME; meet spouses or friends of hams who love white noise;
hear presentations on really neat stuff and see demos of more really neat stuff. It is also a great
chance to meet and learn about the new technologies that are changing our environment from the people
involved in making it happen.
This year marks the 20th time that hams from every continent have gathered to eat BBQ at this function.
As an example, in 1998, we had WAC with G3WOS, 5B4FL, 3C5I, 9Y4LL, 8P6JQ, KH6IO/KH6 and XE2OR.
This year, the event venue is at Dick and Kathie Hanson's. Many of you visited their QTH (then under
construction) last year.
Many of the attendees are the very guys who actually go on the 6 meter and EME expeditions. This year's
event will have a focus of talking about and planning expeditions for the new cycle.
It is really fun to see how the personal interactions help us discover propagation such as the ZF1DC/JA1VOK
path, right after the conversations in the 2001 BBQ.
We try hard to make this an event that non-hams enjoy, want to attend and one where everyone feels welcome.
Despite the protests from a few about the noise during meals, there will be music as always.
For those not familiar with Austin, it is the "live music capital of the USA", featuring blues, rock, folk
and country. It is probably second to Silicon Valley in high tech, plus it is hilly and has beautiful lakes.
It is slightly hot at times, and we have an outstanding assortment of bats, insects and snakes.
The event starts on Friday whenever the first person arrives. A Tex-Mex meal will be served at 1830. The
event continues all day Saturday with hotdogs at noon and the BBQ dinner at 1530. There will be margaritas,
beer, water, soft drinks and popcorn both days.
MOST IMPORTANT, ANYONE PLANNING TO ATTEND MUST RSVP. This event is too large to plan without knowing how
many are coming for each meal.
We need your email commitment by Oct 1, (please, we can't do this right without your help, so help us help you.)

The Mexican meal will be $10 per, and the BBQ will be $20 per. The hot dogs, margaritas, soft drinks, beer,
popcorn etc are FREE. It doesn't matter which of us you send your checks to, but please make them out to
one or the other, not both.
The accommodation options are much improved over past years. Discounted rates are in effect at two nearby
motels; group (6 meter BBQ) rate is $119 for a king or two queens at the Mountain Star ($10 less than last year!)
We're not sure just yet about the rates at the Hampton, but they should be competitive. Be sure to refer to the
Six Meter BBQ.
