I like to operate as a rover. If you don't believe it, see below :

The configuration changes with time, and equipment is changed out. Here are two views of the current (June 2001) internal set-up (click on picture for zoom):

Below are "roves from the past" (click on the photos of the historical vangough rover-mobile to see the full-sized versions)

The September, 1997 Rove to Kansas and Back

Larry Hammel, K5OT and I did a Rover class contest. We started the test in EM-14 and roved North on I-35 to EM-17. We turned West on Hwy 160 to EM-07. After some rest, returned South via Hwy 281 / I-44 / 287 / 1-48 / back to 281 /199 and closed contest in EM-12. Eleven grids were activated. Bands were 50mhz~2.4GHz.

I used a GPS receiver to map the trip a week before. If anybody is interested, I kept notes.

In Kansas, after dark, a local police officer stopped to see if we were chasing a storm. After looking at all the equipment, called for back - up. We then had to listen to his war stories relating to storm chasing until his partner arrived. His partner wanted to know where the storm was. Finally, they let us get back to the contest. Wellington, Kansas must be a very quiet place.

It is good that we were using the GPS receiver. There was half a mile visibility due to the fog bank that lasted from EM - 07 into EM - 06 (look at the fog in the left-hand picture, above). After the fog lifted, we started making some decent contacts on 1.2GHz into Minn. For some reason known only to Murphy or somebody like him, 50MHz conditions were very poor.

Oh yeah, back in Kansas, there was this shaggy lookin' kat and a dude dressed in tin. They were just walkin' down the road. Funny thing, they kept clicking their heels together??? Go figure.

A Young lady stopped at our location in EM - 04, thinking we were chasing a storm, offered to bring us food and drinks. There are some advantages to roving. Then, there was the guy who just had to interrupt us to find out what channel we were watching.

Here are some pictures of the vangough rover-mobile from my 16-grid, January, 1999 Rove:

To show you how long I've had the vehicle, and that roving grew out of portable ops, take a gander at THIS:
